Unqork Create 2022 | The Art of Shifting Codeless Architecture to Mainstream

Two codeless architecture veterans from KPMG discuss strategies for leveraging Codeless as a Service (CaaS), from setting up a strong architectural practice to changing the mindsets of developers and engineers

KMPG’s Raj Konduru, Principal, and Venkat Rayalla, Director, Solutions Engineering Lead, took the stage at Create 2022 to share the ways they have successfully helped clients adopt CaaS. To take full advantage of its power to accelerate modernization, they said, organizations must take a strategic approach, from tackling the right projects and establishing a strong architecture to fostering a new mindset among developers and engineers.

From “buy vs. build” to “buy and build”

Until now, organizations have faced a dilemma, according to Konduru and Rayalla. On one hand, core legacy

platforms are prohibiting growth and customer centricity goals. On the other hand, replacing these platforms is a long and costly journey that often fails to deliver real value.

A codeless approach like Unqork’s enables business to go beyond the “Buy vs. Build” mindset. Instead, they can adopt a “Buy and Build” mindset. Specifically, Konduru explained, organizations can now “freeze and wrap” their legacy core systems, taking advantage of what these systems do well. At the same time, using CaaS, they can quickly wrap a modern tech ecosystem around this core to meet the organization’s evolving needs.

Building a solid base for CaaS

By leveraging CaaS, Rayalla said he and his team have been able to help their clients push the boundaries of their agile processes. Small gains soon add up to substantial increases in speed to market and operational efficiency.

However, he said, you can’t tackle every challenge with CaaS from Day One.

“We would advise that you start small with codeless and grow incrementally,” said Rayalla. “Within no time, you’ll have your base architecture for Unqork.”

Rayalla also strongly suggested that organizations set up a strong architecture practice. Once in place, he said, the rest of the organization will quickly see the positive effects codeless development is bringing to the rest of the enterprise.

Growing codeless consensus across teams

Naturally, IT teams experience some resistance when they move from developing in Angular, React, and other familiar coding platforms to building in a codeless platform like Unqork’s.

“The mind shift is the one that takes time,” said Konduru. “And our training for the tech engineers has been on the mind shift more than actually technical teaching.”

But the shift in mindset soon gives away to enthusiasm, according to Rayalla

“Once the mind shift happens, and you get the hang of things, you see the power of the Unqork and what their team has created,” he said.
